He received his BA from Boston University and his MD from Boston University School of Medicine in 1979. His post-doctoral training was in pediatrics at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. As a U.S. Public Health Service officer, he provided health care on the Devils Lake Sioux Indian reservation at Ft. Totten, ND.
He later served as Deputy Director Chief Medical Officer for the California Area Indian Health Service. He was the Director for Student Health Services at the University of Maine for 18 years.
